Watching VOB files from your Hard Drive

As an alternative to copying all of the files on a DVD to your HDD, you can just select the .vob files that contain the video content that you wish to copy.

To play them you will need a player that recognises the vob format (it is actually mpeg and you could rename the files and play them in Windows Media Player). Cyberlink PowerDVD is one such player that can be used to play the DVD content from your hard drive.

For details on how to do this please follow the links at the top of this post.

With this method you will not get the menus that control the DVD as it would in a DVD player, but, you can still copy all the "extras" that come on the DVD - it is just a question of identifying which files contain the content that you require. It is also a good way of not having to copy the advertising and "bloat" on some DVDs.

Can you post a link where you explain which files to copy? I am trying to take my DVDs and convert them somehow so I can watch them on my iPod. I have downloaded SoundTaxi Pro+Video but I'm not really sure of the rest of the process. Please advise.

If you want to watch movies on the iPod (I do this all the time) you will need to convert the files to .mov files and then just drag them to the iPod in iTunes.

You will need to be able to have copied the files from the DVD to your computer and make sure that you can watch them there first.

The VOB files on a DVD are the same format as mpeg2 files and can be renamed .mpg (part1, part2 ...etc so that you can identify them).

Do an Internet search for a file converter for .avi and .vob etc to .mov formats. I have not adopted one as yet so I cannot advise on what is best.

To strip out the CSS copy protection from the .vob files I use DVD43 - again an easy search.

Most of what we watch on the iPod is stuff downloaded from the BBC iPlayer and they are in .mov format to start with.

PS

I am not familiar with SoundTaxi Pro+Video (but I will take a look).

As for what .vob files you need to copy, the main program is normally the big ones! You can tell what ones you want by playing them in Windows Media Player.

The help files in SoundTaxi Pro+Video should give you instructions on what to do to get your video to your iPod. If it doesn't I would suggest that you look for another program.
