Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)

Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and how this affects Canada (and any other country other than the USA)

This particular act, from the US, seems to be quite the draconian affair. If Canada adopts similar legislation with Bill C-60 it may well be illegal to even talk amongst friends about such issues as copying items of digital media - even if you own them.

Canada Computers

My dealings and experiences with Canada Computers. This post is a work in progress as the information is being transferred from www.tempusfugit.ca.

I have done a fair amount of business with this company and as such here are some observations.

Most of the computer hardware that I have purchased for my "builds" has been purchased from Canada Computers. This is because that they are not only local and Canadian based but they have a reasonable selection of product. I can purchase  components from stores within a short distance of my home and I do not have to resort to ordering things on-line. Although the product line is not as extensive as Tiger Direct say, on-line at least, the product that they carry in the stores is reasonably comprehensive.

In most cases the sales staff are very helpful and knowledgeable and do not appear to be working on a commission basis. There has been few cases where products or services such as extended warranties and hard drive insurance schemes have been promoted by the sales staff.

LAMP - Linux Apache MySQL and PHP

I can see no reason to run LAMP on my public server. If I need to develop and prototype any SQL (or PHP for that matter), I can do so on my Fedora box. I could implement some or all of this under Ubuntu but I have no real need for a relational database at this present time.

Defamation

Google define what they mean by Defamation on their help page:

Blogger does not remove blogs for negative comment
Google Blogger is a tool to allow Internet users to provide content and comment on what they find in life.

Comments, negative or otherwise, are the corner stone of free speech. If you cannot comment on what you perceive as dubious practice then it is a form of censorship. Just because someone has made a negative comment about you it does not mean that the person is defaming or slandering you.

Defamation and the Catholic Church

Apparently the act of defamation is different here. You cannot claim that the truth is a reason that you can defame a Catholic priest.  If you accuse a priest of Pedophilia, and it is true, it is still defamation according to the church. This is according to Canon Law - if you are not a Catholic priest then you have to prove that what is said about you is untrue to claim that someone is defaming you.

Intimidation

An Intimidation Threat is a technique used by a bully that thinks that they have a greater power than the person that they are threatening.
