Canadian tax filing deadline

The April 30th tax deadline is just a date for which is only relevant it you owe tax.

I wouldn't mind betting that this is a very small percentage of the tax paying public.

True, if you are due a refund then you want to get your return in as soon as possible. This has got nothing to do with the deadline. This is nothing to do with the advertizing campaign that Inuit seem to use - they are talking about a MAXIMUM REFUND and hopefully an accurate return. If you are after a maximum refund and you know that you are due one (you have made some deductible investments or you want to realise a capital loss ***) you maybe better off taking your time with your return.

**** the loss has to be in the year you are filing it or possibly carried over from past years - it is too late to sell and make a loss on a stock in 2012 and claim it on your 2011 return (did anyone say RIM!!!!?)

I really don't understand the Tax software industry, surely they would be better off not trying to scare their customer base into filing before they are ready.

Turbo Tax 2011 Canada - Bonus Software

Not only is Turbo Tax Standard overkill (w.r.t. Turbo Tax Basic - half the price) the bonus software is likely to be useless.

TurboTax 2010 shown - 2011 is similar

How come that Futureshop and BestBuy (Canada) do not appear to stock the Basic package?

Although I think that the product is òver-sold`  Ì do not consider it to be a `scam

Nuans Report

The Nuans website says:

The NUANS® report is a seven-page document, generated by the NUANS® name search system which lists corporation names, business names and trademarks most similar to your proposed business name or trademark. The search references a database of existing names that have been registered in Canada.

When I Incorporated my company I had to perform a Nuans search and submit the result with my Articles of Incorporation.
The name of my Incorporated company has nothing to do with this blog or my website, tempusfugit.ca.

If you request a Nuans report in the name of tempusfugit (or any variation of that) I am pretty certain that you will not find any relation to my company, when it existed.

Why can't Quicktax (Intuit) be forthcoming?

Why is it so difficult to see if QT Basic is the same as QT Standard except that you don't get the wizards?

For an extra $20 it seems like a waste of money to me. In fact, it is worth purchasing QT Basic to see if it does include all the forms (even the Flow Through/ Limited Partnership T5013 forms) and that you can copy the data from your 2007 returns, so that I can blog about it.

I have never used the wizards and think that they are a waste of time! The descriptions on the Intuit website seem to indicate that there is some sort of FUD that they are trying to perpetuate to get conusumers to buy the $39.99 version. They claim that you need it if you have RSPs.

At least this year they have increased the limit to 8 from 2 in 2007, I guess that they lost too many customers to UFile!

"Quicktax Basic and Quicktax Standard what is the difference" - this is what I searched for and maybe others will. If so, come back to this post and see what I find. To me, I am willing to spend the $19.99 for QT Basic just so that I see for myself. Even if I have to end up buying the one for twice the price!

UPDATE:
I purchased the Basic version and it was just fine for my needs - see the comment below.

The Difference Between a T5013 and a T5013A

You may receive tax receipts from companies that you may have invested in. You need to know what to do with them when you file your taxes.
